2. Demonstrate use of creative skill in the animation and through use of other visual elements.
3. Explore advanced techiques in software and hardware for the video production and post-production.
4. Deliver a product which meets the requirements of the audience.

Process

Initially, I looked first into a period drama, teen drama and nature documentary for this brief and after weighing up the pros and cons of each I decided to do an opening squences for a fictional children’s animal program called Animal Kingdom.

I researched existing TV opening sequences from shows I enjoyed and made notes of them which influenced the layout of my work.

For my colour palettes I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stick to a green theme or a warm theme consisting of red, amber and orange, so I decided to experiment with both. From this, I chose a colour palette consisting of shades of green and brown.

I wanted an accessible handwritten appearance for my font so I experimented with a few and settled on ‘Marydale’ from Adobe Fonts.

Before filming the animals I wanted to create a storyboard to help guide me.

I then filmed the footage myself. I arranged for a ‘Hawk Walk’ at Castle Bolton where my dad flew a Harris Hawk called Raspy and I filmed him using my phone and also used this opportunity to film the other birds of prey there such as crows and owls. To film the other mammals I booked to go to Yorkshire Wildlife Park which I also filmed using my phone camera. The reason behind the was beecause these settings aren't suitable to rent equipment out from Leeds Beckett when it was an enivironment where the cameras could potentially become damaged (i.e., rocky terrains, busy locations).

For sound effects I was fortunate to film the birds really clearly at Castle Bolton so I wanted to incorporate that. I made all my animated visual assets in Adobe Illustrator using skills from my Graphic Design assessment in my first year with the animal icons previously seen in this portfolio, I decided to take this skill further and make icons for all the animals I wanted to include in my opening sequence.

I also created some styleframes so I could make sure my chosen design would actually work and look appropriate for the audience I wanted to reach, which in this case would be preschool children.

I put everything together in Adobe Premiere and used some effects from After Effects to make the eyes of the animal icons move and page turning on the case files.

The music is from Pixabay – copyright free.

I made a breakdown video of all the effects as part of the assessment criteria.

The information for the case files came from Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Tapirs Organisation, WWF Animals and World Wildlife.

Evaluation

I did enjoy making this project because I love animals however, ideally I would have filmed with a good quality camera. On the day of visiting Yorkshire Wildlife Park to film the animals it did rain, quite a lot, so it would have been nice to film on a sunny day. The assets could have also used some texture at the start and end of the video just to make them look less basic.
